10 November 2008
Kids and babies love wheels, as babies they enjoy new-born freedom whilst shuffling around in their walkers, as toddlers they move on to wheeled ride on toys and play bumper cars with their friends (OK maybe not intentionally). However, these early interests are all providing excellent motor and steering skills to our kids and giving them some self-confidence.
As the child grows they will be moving onto bigger and better things..... kids bikes! Learning to ride a bike is a big milestone and is not easy. Urchin has some great products and advice to get you started.... Balance is the keyChildren can learn to master their balance and motor skills from an early age with children's learner balance bikes. From about 20 months you can start kids on two-wheeler starter bikes. There are no pedals, but this is perfect to start with. Choose a size that allows your child's feet to reach the ground. They will use their legs and arms to push, steer and balance. Find a big space, preferably with some slight slopes and let them lose. They will not pick up great speed but will get some great self-confidence. PedalsChildren's trikes is a great opportunity for your child to master the art of pedalling and steering without having to cope with balance too! Choose a trike with the option of a lockable front wheel and parent push-handle. This will mean than when your child becomes tired whilst out and about you are able to give them a push.SafetyA safety helmet and safety pads are a very good idea, even at a young age a small fall at low speed can be painful and upsetting.Their first bikeIt is a great sense of achievement for you and your child when they finally master riding a bike. It is not easy sailing though, be patient and calm and this should rub off on them. Give them time out if they become exasperated, as it will be a frustrating time for them.Just remember it is all very well shouting PEDAL PEDAL PEDAL......just remember to tell them how and when to BRAKE!! Then what next- how can you beat that buzz and the excitement of getting your child'd first bike?.... Why not try a pedal car Have Fun. |
